The Odour Management Working Subgroup (SGO) of the Spanish Association of Water and Sanitation Supply (AEAS) was established not long ago. Among the initiatives promoted within the SGO is the creation of a position paper on odour management. To this end, this group has drawn on a similar initiative developed by the WEF and has developed a survey to assess the cost of odour management in sanitation systems serving more than 10,000 population equivalents across Spain.
After nearly a year of work, this survey is now finally available to all AEAS members. The aim is to gather information on the state of odour management in Spain's wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the necessary investments, and the operational costs associated with their proper management.
Once the data collection process has been completed, the data will be analysed with the aim of properly quantifying the economic cost of air treatment at the WWTPs. The idea of the group, led by Asier López Etxebarria from the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium, is to be able to adequately assess this cost in future projects for WWTPs and related infrastructures, ensuring that they do not cause odour impact and presenting these figures to the various competent environmental authorities overseeing wastewater treatment.
The SGO is part of the Operations, Technologies, and Energy (OTE) group of AEAS, which in turn is part of the Technical Commission V working in the field of wastewater treatment.
