Public consultation on PNE 77270 " DEVELOPMENT OF COLLABORATIVE ODOUR MAPS THROUGH CITIZEN SCIENCE".

   Finally, after years of work, we are pleased to inform you that the proposed Spanish standard PNE 77270 "CONSTRUCTION OF COLLABORATIVE ODOUR MAPS THROUGH CITIZEN SCIENCE" will be open for public information from May 17th to June 25th.

   On 16 May 2023, the Spanish Official Journal (BOE in Spanish) published the draft UNE standards that the Spanish Association for Standardisation has in process, corresponding to the month of April 2023, among which is the text proposed by the group that has been working for several years on the standardisation of the use of citizen science for odour mapping.

The Italian pilot for the HORIZON 2020 D-NOSES Project: combining citizen science and dispersion modelling to identify odour sources in the municipal area of Castellanza

    This work aims to describe the Italian pilot study carried out within the frame of the H2020 D-NOSES project and discuss the opportunity to integrate different approaches in order to deal with complex situations. The pilot study was carried out in the municipal area between Castellanza, Marnate, and Olgiate Olona, where an odour problem has been lamented for years.

    As a first step of the project, 4 industries were identified as potential odour sources: a chemical plant, the municipal WWTP, a textile and dyeing industry, and the WWTP connected to the dyeing industry. In order to monitor the odour problem, it was proposed to combine the application of the D-NOSES methodology with the “traditional” way involving olfactometric measurements and dispersion modelling, the latter being the approach foreseen by the Regional guideline. The comparison of the citizens’ observations and the model outcomes allowed to verify the compatibility of the odour observations with the emissions from the two WWTPs.

The European Horizon project DNOSES just published all the deliverables.

dnoses deliverablesD-NOSES stands for Distributed Network for Odour Sensing, Empowerment and Sustainability. This 3 year-long project was supported by International Associations, experts in citizen science, odour and sustainability experts, local administrations and public bodies. The deliverables of this 3.2 million Euros project are just being published, so if you wish to become a "master" in the use of citizen science to map odours, here you have much information to learn a bit more.

   This DNOSES project is a European Horizon 2020 project that studied the use of mapping odour annoyance to describe and study the impact of this environmental vector. The idea was to launch several case studies to see how better use this tool that links odour with annoyance. This project is over and now all the deliverables are available.
