16841 field inspection2   One week left for the EN 16841 to be implemented at national level by publication of an identical national standard or by endorsement. Just seven days to start working with this new European Standard that describes two methods for direct assessment of odours in ambient air: The grid method and the plume method.

The dynamic olfactometry method described in EN 13725 is generally only suitable for measurement of odour emissions at the source, as the practical lower detection limit is typically ≥10 ouE/m3 (according to the Final draft of the EN 16841). Dynamic Olfactometry should not be applied directly to determine odour exposure in the field, although some authors claim that this is possible.

Intensity vs. Odour Concentration

The terminological distinction between the quantities of stimulus and sensory effect is very important and leaves no room for misinterpretation of olfactometric results. The introduction of the odour level as a link between olfactory stimuli and effects will help to reach this objective.

WG2 lunch break in Barcelona   The 12th meeting of the working group 2 dealing with dynamic olfactometry just took place in Barcelona the 14th and 15th of February and again many decisions were taken that will affect the day by day work of the lab managers and other olfactometric facilities.

Mr Van Harreveld welcomed all participants to Barcelona and opened the meeting. The convenor remarked that CEN has implemented a new rule regarding the maximum duration of the preliminary stage of a project: 3 years. If a working group exceeds that time limit the project will automatically be abandoned. This rule will become effective in 2017 and has no retroactive effects.
