ILC20   Once again, the German company Olfasense is behind the organization of the 2020 proficiency test for Dynamic Olfactometry according to the European Standard EN 13725. The registration period fo this test has started and organizers invite laboratories from different countries to participate in this ILC2020 test.

The EN 13725 interlaboratory comparison test allows odour laboratories all around the world to demonstrate compliance with their performance requirements and compare the performance of any laboratory internationally. This is essential for those laboratories that maintain ISO 17025 accreditation.

P14I1   One way to assess odour nuisance is to apply a survey to the area of influence of an activity that potentially impacts the surrounding community. Repeated surveys were carried out in neighbours of the waste water treatment plant at Chimbarongo, Chile, during the years 2017 and 2018, using the VDI3883/1 model questionnaire.

In parallel, an odour impact measurement was carried out by means of field inspection, using a simplified methodology of VDI3940/1. Odour hour frequencies were generally determined well below the German regulatory threshold of 10%, which was also supported by ex-ante odour dispersion modeling.

In industrialized cities, there are many possible sources of odorous compounds, such as steel and pelletizing industries, wastewater treatment plants, landfills, and harbors. For most of these sources, limited data is available on odours emissions in inventories. To estimate odorous VOCs in gaseous emissions from industries it is necessary to identify which VOCs are emitted and are odorous.

Although reasonably simple, there are few papers addressing this issue. Thus, this study aimed to categorize chemically the VOCs and TRS emissions from major activities in an industrialized urban area of Brazil, crossing references with U.S. EPA - AP 42 documents, SPECIATE 4.5 database, and literature available.
